In most cases, sensitive teeth (dentin hypersensitivity) occurs when the gums in our mouth recede. Our gums act as a protective blanket over the roots of our teeth. As our gums recede, the underlying tooth roots are exposed, causing discomfort.
Gums commonly recede for the following reasons:
1.Improper or heavy brushing of the teeth. It is estimated that 45-
90% of people brush with too much pressure. Over weeks,
months and years of improper brushing, they remove significant
gum tissue exposing the roots of our tooth.
2.Poor oral hygiene can lead to plaque and tartar build-up around
the teeth and our gums. Over time this plaque hardens and
becomes tartar. Bacteria in this tartar are responsible for the
gingivitis and periodontal diseases that cause the gums to
recede.
3.Insufficient saliva to lubricate our gums and teeth. Our saliva
acts as a cleaning and lubricating agent to our teeth and our
gums, without enough proper saliva and oral cleanness, our
gums would recede, and thus causing discomfort and lead to
plague build-up. |
